In a recent paper, McMullen showed an inequality between the Thurston norm and the Alexander norm of a 3-manifold. This generalizes the well-known fact that twice the genus of a knot is bounded from below by the degree of the Alexander polynomial. We extend the Bennequin inequality for links to an inequality for all po…
In a previous paper, the second author defined integer-valued functions delta_n on the first cohomology of a 3-manifold, generalizing McMullen's Alexander norm. It was shown that these functions give lower bounds on the Thurston norm. In this paper, we reformulate these invariants in terms of Reidemeister torsion over …
Every element in the first cohomology group of a 3--manifold is dual to embedded surfaces. The Thurston norm measures the minimal `complexity' of such surfaces. For instance the Thurston norm of a knot complement determines the genus of the knot in the 3--sphere. We show that the degrees of twisted Alexander polynomial…
The taut polynomial equals a twisted Alexander polynomial.
A new method computes Teichmüller polynomials from integer permutations.
Let $φ\in \mbox{Out}(F_n)$ be a free group outer automorphism that can be represented by an expanding, irreducible train-track map. The automorphism determines a free-by-cyclic group and a homomorphism . By work of Neumann, Bieri-Neumann-Strebel and Dowdall-Kapovi…
Consider a group G and an epimorphism u_0:G\to\Z inducing a splitting of G as a semidirect product ker(u_0)\rtimes_\varphi\Z with ker(u_0) a finitely generated free group and \varphi\in Out(ker(u_0)) representable by an expanding irreducible train track map. Building on our earlier work [Dynamics on free-by-cyclic grou…
For a 3-manifold M, McMullen derived from the Alexander polynomial of M a norm on H^1(M, R) called the Alexander norm. He showed that the Thurston norm on H^1(M, R), which measures the complexity of a dual surface, is an upper bound for the Alexander norm. He asked if these two norms were equal on all of H^1(M,R) when …
We introduce twisted Alexander norms of a compact connected orientable 3-manifold with first Betti number bigger than one generalizing norms of McMullen and Turaev. We show that twisted Alexander norms give lower bounds on the Thurston norm of a 3-manifold. Using these we completely determine the Thurston norm of many …

New polynomial helps compute flow growth rates in 3D manifolds.
We establish a new homological lower bound for the Thurston norm on 1-cohomology of 3-manifolds. This generalizes previous results of C. McMullen, S. Harvey, and the author. We also establish an analogous lower bound for 1-cohomology of 2-dimensional CW-complexes.
We define an infinite sequence of new invariants, delta_n, of a group G that measure the size of the successive quotients of the derived series of G. In the case that G is the fundamental group of a 3-manifold, we obtain new 3-manifold invariants. These invariants are closely related to the topology of the 3-manifold. …
The paper calculates the size of origami orbit graphs in complex surfaces.
In this note we present a new definition of the 4-manifold admitting inequivalent symplectic structures constructed by McMullen-Taubes which leads to the identification of a new symplectic structure. We prove moreover that it is diffeomorphic to one of the link surgery manifolds introduced by Fintushel-Stern.
We prove a Gauss-Bonnet theorem for (finite coverings of) moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces endowed with the McMullen metric. The proof uses properties of an exhaustion of moduli spaces by compact submanifolds with corners and the Gauss-Bonnet formula of Allendoerfer and Weil for Riemannian polyhedra.
This thesis surveys various metrics on Riemann surface spaces.
This paper is devoted to the classification of connected components of Prym eigenform loci in the strata H(2,2)^odd and H(1,1,2) in the Abelian differentials bundle in genus 3. These loci, discovered by McMullen are GL^+(2,R)-invariant submanifolds (of complex dimension 3) that project to the locus of Riemann surfaces …
The Euclidean traveller explores various geometric spaces, seeing different places in each.
Using an idea of Doug Lind, we give a lower bound for the Perron-Frobenius degree of a Perron number that is not totally-real. As an application, we prove that there are cubic Perron numbers whose Perron-Frobenius degrees are arbitrary large; a result known to Lind, McMullen and Thurston. A similar result is proved for…
The notion of i-bounded geometry generalises simultaneously bounded geometry and the geometry of punctured torus Kleinian groups. We show that the limit set of a surface Kleinian group of i-bounded geometry is locally connected by constructing a natural Cannon-Thurston map. This is an exposition of a special case of th…
In this paper we present a self-contained combinatorial proof of the lower bound theorem for normal pseudomanifolds, including a treatment of the cases of equality in this theorem. We also discuss McMullen and Walkup's generalised lower bound conjecture for triangulated spheres in the context of the lower bound theorem…
For an even number, we study representations of the mapping class group of the -punctured sphere arising from -TQFT when all punctures are colored by the same integer . We prove that the conjecture of Andersen, Masbaum and Ueno holds for the -punctured sphere for all . In t…
We provide a simpler proof of the hard Lefschetz Theorem for face rings of PL spheres: While the algebraic theory remains the same, we replace the geometric constructions by Pachner's Theorem. This simplifies the reasoning for an important special case of the main result of the first author in arxiv:1812.10454, and alr…
We prove that for each discriminant , the corresponding Prym eigenform locus discovered by McMullen in the stratum is connected. Thus, the projection of any of those loci in the moduli space is a single Teichmüller curve. Along the way, we obtain a classification …
Constructs subvarieties in translation surface strata using combinatorial input.
Let be a compact orientable surface of finite type with at least one boundary component. Let be a pseudo Anosov mapping class. We prove a conjecture of McMullen by showing that there exists a finite cover and a lift of such that $\wt{f}_*: H_1(\wtΣ; \m…
New methods for calculating curvature in graph theory.
This paper is devoted to the classification of the infinite families of Teichmuller curves generated by Prym eigenforms of genus 3 having a single zero. These curves were discovered by McMullen. The main invariants of our classification is the discriminant D of the corresponding quadratic order, and the generators of t…
We study the space of generalized translation invariant valuations on a finite-dimensional vector space and construct a partial convolution which extends the convolution of smooth translation invariant valuations. Our main theorem is that McMullen's polytope algebra is a subalgebra of the (partial) convolution algebra …
Let be a lattice in . We prove that if the associated locally symmetric space contains infinitely many maximal totally geodesic subspaces of dimension at least , then is arithmetic. This answers a question of Reid for hyperbolic -manifolds and, independently, McMullen for hyperbolic $…
We investigate Friedl-Lück's universal -torsion for descending HNN extensions of finitely generated free groups, and so in particular for -by- groups. This invariant induces a semi-norm on the first cohomology of the group which is an analogue of the Thurston norm for -manifold groups. We prove…
We show that the translation length of any parabolic isometry on a complete semi-uniformly visible CAT(0) space is always zero. As a consequence, we will classify the isometries on visible CAT(0) spaces in terms of translation lengths. We will also show that the moduli space of surface o…
Given a Prym-Teichmüller curve in , this note provides an invariant that sorts the cusp prototypes of Lanneau and Nguyen by component. This can be seen as an analogue of McMullen's genus spin invariant, although the source of this invariant is different. Moreover, we describe the Galois action on the…
A version of a conjecture of McMullen is as follows: Given a hyperbolizable 3-manifold M with incompressible boundary, there exists a uniform constant K such that if N is a hyperbolic 3-manifold homeomorphic to the interior of M, then the injectivity radius based at points in the convex core of N is bounded above by K.…
New separation concepts for Anosov representations help bound Thurston asymmetric metric.
We refine the recent local rigidity result for the marked length spectrum obtained by the first and third author in \cite{Guillarmou-Lefeuvre-18} and give an alternative proof using the geodesic stretch between two Anosov flows and some uniform estimate on the variance appearing in the central limit theorem for Anosov …
This article investigates the complex symplectic geometry of the deformation space of complex projective structures on a closed oriented surface of genus at least 2. The cotangent symplectic structure given by the Schwarzian parametrization is studied carefully and compared to the Goldman symplectic structure on the ch…
For each pseudo-Anosov map on surface , we will associate it with a -submodule of , denoted by . is defined by an interaction between the Thurston norm and dilatation of pseudo-Anosov maps. We will develop a few nice properties of and give a few examples to show …
We discuss the relationship between two analogues in a 3-manifold of the set of prime ideals in a number field. We prove that if is a sequence of knots obeying the Chebotarev law in the sense of Mazur and McMullen, then is a stably generic link in the sense of Mih…
Weil-Petersson volumes vary continuously with weighted points on a projective line.
We study the problem of rigidity of closures of totally geodesic plane immersions in geometrically finite manifolds containing rank cusps. We show that the key notion of K-thick recurrence of horocycles fails generically in this setting. This property was introduced in the recent work of McMullen, Mohammadi and Oh.…
We prove the equivalences of several classical complete metrics on the Teichmüller and the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces. We use as bridge two new Kähler metrics, the Ricci metric and the perturbed Ricci metric and prove that the perturbed Ricci metric is a complete Kähler metric with bounded negative holomorphic s…
Classifies horocycle flow closures in hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
We survey the renormalized volume of hyperbolic 3-manifolds, as a tool for Teichmuller theory, using simple differential geometry arguments to recover results sometimes first achieved by other means. One such application is McMullen's quasifuchsian (or more generally Kleinian) reciprocity, for which different arguments…
