We prove the existence of a geometric characteristic submanifold for non-positively curved manifolds of any dimension greater than or equal to three. In dimension three, our result is a geometric version of the topological characteristic submanifold theorem due to Jaco, Shalen and Johannson.
Haken n-manifolds have been defined and studied by B. Foozwell and H. Rubinstein in analogy with the classical Haken manifolds of dimension 3, based upon the the theory of boundary patterns developed by K. Johannson. The Euler characteristic of a Haken manifold is analyzed and shown to be equal to the sum of the Charne…
Proves a theorem for 3D Poincaré duality pairs.
We describe a new approach to the canonical decompositions of 3-manifolds along tori and annuli due to Jaco-Shalen and Johannson (with ideas from Waldhausen) - the so-called JSJ-decomposition theorem. This approach gives an accessible proof of the decomposition theorem; in particular it does not use the annulus-torus t…
We introduce a homology theory whose Euler characteristics counts ASD bundles over four dimensional co-associative submanifolds in (almost) G_2 manifolds. As a TQFT, in relative situations, we have the Fukaya-Floer category of Lagrangians intersection in the moduli space of special Lagrangian submanifolds in CY threefo…
The Heegaard genus g of an irreducible closed orientable 3-manifold puts a limit on the number and complexity of the pieces that arise in the Jaco-Shalen-Johannson decomposition of the manifold by its canonical tori. For example, if p of the complementary components are not Seifert fibered, then p < g. This result gene…
Using the Geometrization Theorem we prove a result on centralizers in fundamental groups of 3-manifolds. This result had been obtained by Jaco and Shalen and by Johannson using different techniques.
We give a sufficient condition for an open 3-manifold to admit a decomposition along properly embedded open annuli and tori, generalizing the toric splitting of Jaco-Shalen and Johannson.
The profinite completion of the fundamental group of a closed, orientable -manifold determines the Kneser--Milnor decomposition. If is irreducible, then the profinite completion determines the Jaco--Shalen--Johannson decomposition of .
We show here that the Nielsen core of the bumping set of the domain of discontinuity of a Kleinian group is the boundary of the characteristic submanifold of the associated 3-manifold with boundary. Some examples of interesting characteristic submanifolds are given. We also give a construction of the characteristic…
Study of Poisson homeomorphisms and rigidity of coisotropic submanifolds.
Study geometric properties of SGL submanifolds in a specific manifold.
We fully classify all Lagrangian submanifolds of a complex Grassmannian which are an orbit of a compact group of isometries and have positive Euler characteristic.
Study finds rigid submanifolds in spacelike waves under specific conditions.
We show that -invariant submanifolds of metric contact pairs with orthogonal characteristic foliations make constant angles with the Reeb vector fields. Our main result is that for the normal case such submanifolds of dimension at least are all minimal. We prove that an odd-dimensional -invariant submanifold …
We give a construction of the Floer homology of the pair of {\it non-compact} Lagrangian submanifolds, which satisfies natural continuity property under the Hamiltonian isotopy which moves the infinity but leaves the intersection set of the pair compact. This construction uses the concept of Lagrangian cobordism and ce…
We give new bounds for the distance between two exceptional filling slopes for a 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold in several different situations. The distance between a reducible slope and a slope that produces a manifold with finite fundamental group is at most 2. The distance between a reducible slope and one that pro…

New 3D shapes can't be split into torus pieces.
A rigid submanifold result in contact geometry.
Study uses Newton polytopes to distinguish Lagrangian fillings of Legendrian submanifolds.
In this paper we complete the study of the normal holonomy groups of complex submanifolds (non nec. complete) of Cn or CPn. We show that irreducible but non transitive normal holonomies are exactly the Hermitian s-representations of [CD09, Table 1] (see Corollary 1.1). For each one of them we construct a non necessaril…
In this article, we prove that there exists at least one chord which is characteristic of Reeb vector field connecting a given Legendre submanifold in a closed contact manifold with any contact form.
We introduce the notion of a `canonical' splitting over Z or ZxZ for a finitely generated group G. We show that when G happens to be the fundamental group of an orientable Haken manifold M with incompressible boundary, then the decomposition of the group naturally obtained from canonical splittings is closely related t…
Let M be a compact, orientable, irreducible, atoroidal 3-manifold with boundary an incompressible torus. Techniques based on the characteristic submanifold theory are used to bound the intersection number of two slopes αand βon the boundary of M. The method applies when βis the boundary slope of an essential surface F …
Study on heat content for submanifolds in sub-Riemannian geometry.
A contact pair on a manifold always admits an associated metric for which the two characteristic contact foliations are orthogonal. We show that all these metrics have the same volume element. We also prove that the leaves of the characteristic foliations are minimal with respect to these metrics. We give an example wh…
We write down the local equations that characterize the submanifolds N of a Dirac manifold M which have a normal bundle that is either a coisotropic or an isotropic submanifold of TM endowed with the tangent Dirac structure. In the Poisson case, these formulas prove again a result of Xu: the submanifold N has a normal …
Develops methods for computing conformal invariants of submanifolds.
In this paper we study the warped product submanifolds of a Lorentzian paracosymplectic manifold and obtain some nonexistence results. We show that a warped product semi-invariant submanifold in the form {} of Lorentzian paracosymplectic manifold such that the characteristic vector field is n…
We study the class of transversal submanifolds. We characterize their blow-ups at transversal points and prove a negligibility theorem for their "generalized characteristic set", with respect to the Carnot-Carathéodory Hausdorff measure. This set is made by all points of non-maximal degree. Observing that C^1 submanifo…
An explicit construction of closed, orientable, smooth, aspherical 4-manifolds with any odd Euler characteristic greater than 12 is presented. The manifolds constructed here are all Haken manifolds in the sense of B. Foozwell and H. Rubinstein and can be systematically reduced to balls by suitably cutting them open alo…
New theory of distributions on spaces with singular submanifolds.
Develops a method for random manifolds and submanifolds, focusing on 3-ball knots.
Horizontal points of smooth submanifolds in stratified groups play the role of singular points with respect to the Carnot-Carathe'odory distance. When we consider hypersurfaces, they coincide with the well known characteristic points. In two step groups, we obtain pointwise estimates for the Riemannian surface measure …

The exceptional Dehn filling conjecture of the second author concerning the relationship between exceptional slopes on the boundary of a hyperbolic knot manifold has been verified in all cases other than small Seifert filling slopes. In this paper we verify it when is a small Seifert filling slope and $β…
Survey of recent austere submanifold results.
Let S be an arbitrary real surface, with or without boundary, contained in a hypersurface M of the complex euclidean space \C^2, with S and M of class C^{2, a}, where 0 < a < 1. If M is globally minimal, if S is totally real except at finitely many complex tangencies which are hyperbolic in the sense of E. Bishop and i…
Morse theory connects low energy submanifolds in 3-sphere.
This paper proves the manifold hypothesis for lower embedding dimensions using osculating hyperspheres.
In this thesis, we study extensions of the theory of Riemannian submanifolds in two directions. First, we will show how Riemannian geometry and submanifold theory in particular, can be generalized using the notion of 'Rinehart spaces', and it will be demonstrated how the developed framework unifies some existing and ne…
We show that a small neighborhood of a closed symplectic submanifold in a geometrically bounded aspherical symplectic manifold has non-vanishing symplectic homology. As a consequence, we establish the existence of contractible closed characteristics on any thickening of the boundary of the neighborhood. When applied to…
The paper establishes a correspondence between normal distributions and neat foliations on manifolds with boundary.
