48 results for Gromoll-Meyer sphere

We construct a new infinite family of models of exotic 7-spheres. These models are direct generalizations of the Gromoll-Meyer sphere. From their symmetries, geodesics and submanifolds half of them are closer to the standard 7-sphere than any other known model for an exotic 7-sphere.

We studied isometric stochastic flows of a Stratonovich stochastic differential equation on spheres, i.e. on the standard sphere and Gromoll-Meyer exotic sphere. The standard sphere Ss7S^7_s can be constructed as the quotient manifold Sp(2,H)/S3\mathrm{Sp}(2, \mathbb{H})/S^3 with the so-called {\bullet}-action of S3S^3, where…

The first part of the paper is to improve the fundamental theory of isoparametric functions on general Riemannian manifolds. Next we focus our attention on exotic spheres, especially on "exotic" 4-spheres (if exist) and the Gromoll-Meyer sphere. In particular, as one of main results we prove: there exists no properly t…

Paper constructs exotic spacetimes with same physical properties.

problem Whether two topologically identical manifolds can have different geometries.
method Computational approach to produce physical models on exotic spheres.
result Lorentzian metrics on homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic manifolds with same physical properties.

A metric with positive sectional curvature on the Gromoll-Meyer exotic 7-sphere is constructed explicitly. The proof relies on a 2-parameter family of left invariant metrics on Sp(2) and a one-parameter family of conformal deformations via an isoparametric function F on it. One byproduct is a metric with positive secti…

Gromoll and Meyer have represented a certain exotic 7-sphere Σ7Σ^7 as a biquotient of the Lie group G=Sp(2)G = Sp(2). We show for a 2-parameter family of left invariant metrics on GG that the induced metric on Σ7Σ^7 has strictly positive sectional curvature at all points outside four subvarieties of codimension 1\geq 1 wh…

A closed manifold is called a biquotient if it is diffeomorphic to K\G/H for some compact Lie group G with closed subgroups K and H such that K acts freely on G/H. Biquotients are a major source of examples of Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature. We prove several classification results for biquoti…

Study on curvature properties of exotic 7-sphere using quaternionic geometry.

method Using Kaluza-Klein Ansatz with quaternionic language, focusing on moduli spaces of instantons and metrics.
result Identified a center in the moduli space of k=2k=2 instantons and computed the Ricci tensor for a metric of maximal isometry.

This is a survey paper on Morse theory and the existence problem for closed geodesics. The free loop space plays a central role, since closed geodesics are critical points of the energy functional. As such, they can be analyzed through variational methods. The topics that we discuss include: Riemannian background, the …

The usual Gromoll-Meyer's generalized Morse lemma near degenerate critical points on Hilbert spaces, so called splitting lemma, is stated for at least C2C^2-smooth functionals. In this paper we establish a splitting theorem and a shifting theorem for a class of continuously directional differentiable functionals (lower…

The Gromoll-Meyer's generalized Morse lemma (so called splitting lemma) near degenerate critical points on Hilbert spaces, which is one of key results in infinite dimensional Morse theory, is usually stated for at least C2C^2-smooth functionals. It obstructs one using Morse theory to study most of variational problems …

Soliton spheres are immersed 2-spheres in the conformal 4-sphere S^4=HP^1 that allow rational, conformal parametrizations f:CP^1->HP^1 obtained via twistor projection and dualization from rational curves in CP^{2n+1}. Soliton spheres can be characterized as the case of equality in the quaternionic Pluecker estimate. A …
