We study random elements of subgroups (and cosets) of the mapping class group of a closed hyperbolic surface, in part through the properties of their mapping tori. In particular, we study the distribution of the homology of the mapping torus (with rational, integer, and finite field coefficients, the hyperbolic volume …

We refine some classical estimates in Seiberg-Witten theory, and discuss an application to the spectral geometry of three-manifolds. In particular, we show that on a rational homology three-sphere YY, for any Riemannian metric the first eigenvalue of the laplacian on coexact one-forms is bounded above explicitly in te…

In this short note, we show that the twisted Alexander polynomial associated to a parabolic SL(2,C)-representation detects genus and fibering of the twist knots. As a corollary, a conjecture of Dunfield, Friedl and Jackson is proved for the hyperbolic twist knots.

The study explores finite quotients of 3-manifold groups and their existence and non-existence.

problem Does there exist a 3-manifold group with a specific finite quotient but not others?
method The approach combines group cohomology, topological results, and probabilistic methods.
result Proves existence and non-existence of 3-manifolds with certain finite quotients.

To a knot in 3-space, one can associate a sequence of Laurent polynomials, whose nnth term is the nnth colored Jones polynomial. The paper is concerned with the asymptotic behavior of the value of the nnth colored Jones polynomial at $e^{\a/n}$, when $\a$ is a fixed complex number and nn tends to infinity. We analy…

We discuss here a generalization of a theorem by Dunfield stating that the peripheral holonomy map, from the character variety of a 3-manifold to the A-polynomial is birational. Dunfield's proof involves the rigidity of maximal volume. The volume is still an important ingredient in this paper. Unfortunately at this poi…

These are the extended notes of a talk I gave at the Geometric Topology Seminar of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn on January 30th, 2012. My goal was to familiarize the topologists with the basics of arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds and sketch some interesting results in the theory of 3-manifolds (suc…

method Sufficient conditions and lower bounds for dimension.
result Improved understanding of high-dimensional components in prime knots.

We propose an algebraic model of the conjectural triply graded homology of Gukov, Dunfield and Rasmussen for some torus knots. It turns out to be related to the q,t-Catalan numbers of Garsia and Haiman.

We show the problem of counting homomorphisms from the fundamental group of a homology 33-sphere MM to a finite, non-abelian simple group GG is #P-complete, in the case that GG is fixed and MM is the computational input. Similarly, deciding if there is a non-trivial homomorphism is NP-complete. In both reductions,…

Dunfield-Garoufalidis and Boyer-Zhang proved that the A-polynomial of a nontrivial knot in S3S^{3} is nontrivial. In this paper, we use holonomy perturbations to prove the non-triviality of the A-polynomial for a nontrivial, null-homotopic knot in an irreducible 3-manifold. Also, we give a strong constraint on the A-po…

The coefficients of twisted Alexander polynomials of a knot induce regular functions of the SL2(C)SL_2(\mathbb{C})-character variety. We prove that the function of the highest degree has a finite value at an ideal point which gives a minimal genus Seifert surface by Culler-Shalen theory. It implies a partial affirmative an…

In this paper we apply the twisted Alexander polynomial to study the fibering and genus detecting problems for oriented links. In particular we generalize a conjecture of Dunfield, Friedl and Jackson on the torsion polynomial of hyperbolic knots to hyperbolic links, and confirm it for an infinite family of hyperbolic 2…

Let M be an orientable, cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold of finite volume. We show that the restriction map from a Dehn surgery component in the PSL(2,C)-character variety of M to the character variety of the boundary of M is a birational isomorphism onto its image. This generalises a result by Nathan Dunfield. A key step …

In the preceding paper, Calegari and Dunfield exhibit a sequence of hyperbolic 3-manifolds which have increasing injectivity radius, and which, subject to some conjectures in number theory, are rational homology spheres. We prove unconditionally that these manifolds are rational homology spheres, and give a sufficient …
