We give explicit formulae for the volumes of hyperbolic cone-manifolds of double twist knots, a class of two-bridge knots which includes twist knots and two-bridge knots with Conway notation C(2n,3)C(2n,3). We also study the Riley polynomial of a class of one-relator groups which includes two-bridge knot groups.

result The adjoint hyperbolic torsion polynomial determines the genus and fibering of double twist knots.

Twisted links are a generalization of virtual links. As virtual links correspond to abstract links on orientable surfaces, twisted links correspond to abstract links on (possibly non-orientable) surfaces. In this paper, we introduce the notion of the double covering of a twisted link. It is defined by considering the o…

A rational number rr is called a left orderable slope of a knot KS3K \subset S^3 if the 3-manifold obtained from S3S^3 by rr-surgery along KK has left orderable fundamental group. In this paper we consider the double twist knots C(k,l)C(k,l) in the Conway notation. For any positive integers mm and nn, we show that if $…

Virtual knot theory is a generalization of knot theory which is based on Gauss chord diagrams and link diagrams on closed oriented surfaces. A twisted knot is a generalization of a virtual knot, which corresponds to a link diagram on a possibly non-orientable surface. In this paper, we discuss an invariant of twisted l…

We consider a homology sphere Mn(K1,K2)M_n(K_1,K_2) presented by two knots K1,K2K_1,K_2 with linking number 1 and framing (0,n)(0,n). We call the manifold {\it Matsumoto's manifold}. We show that there exists no contractible bound of Mn(T2,3,K2)M_n(T_{2,3},K_2) if n<2τ(K2)n<2τ(K_2) holds. We also give a formula of Ozsváth-Szabó's ττ-invariant as…

In recent years, several families of hyperbolic knots have been shown to have both volume and λ1λ_1 (first eigenvalue of the Laplacian) bounded in terms of the twist number of a diagram, while other families of knots have volume bounded by a generalized twist number. We show that for general knots, neither the twist nu…

In this paper we study the knot Floer homology invariants of the twisted and untwisted Whitehead doubles of an arbitrary knot K. We present a formula for the filtered chain homotopy type of HFK(D(+,K,t)) in terms of the invariants for K, where D(+,K,t) denotes the t-twisted positive-clasped Whitehead double of K. In pa…

We use bordered Heegaard Floer homology to compute the tau invariant of a family of satellite knots obtained via twisted infection along two components of the Borromean rings, a generalization of Whitehead doubling. We show that tau of the resulting knot depends only on the two twisting parameters and the values of tau…

Researchers compute Khovanov polynomials for satellite knots.

problem Computing Khovanov polynomials for satellite knots.
method Explicit computation using a computer program for two families of satellite knots.
result Khovanov polynomials can be expressed as a linear combination of pattern and companion invariants, with a jump at a critical point.

We analyze transverse doubled knots in the standard contact 3-space by using spanned clasp disks. As applications, we will estimate their self-linking number and furthermore we will show that in many cases, transverse twist knots with the maximal self-linking number are unique up to transverse isotopy.

We show that for genus one knots the Alexander polynomial and the homology of the double cover branching over the knot provide obstructions to cosmetic crossings. As an application we prove the nugatory crossing conjecture for the negatively twisted, positive Whitehead doubles of all knots. We also verify the conjectur…

Let K(m,p)K_{(m,p)} denote the family of double twist knots where 2m12m-1 and 2p2p are non-zero integers denoting the number of half-twists in each region. Using a result of Takata, we prove a formula for the colored Jones polynomial of K(m,p)K_{(-m,-p)} and K(m,p)K_{(-m,p)}. The latter case leads to new families of qq-hypergeomet…

The concordance orders of many algebraic order two knots of ten or fewer crossings have been heretofore unknown.
