In this paper we use the G-spin theorem to show that the Davis hyperbolic 4-manifold admits harmonic spinors. This is the first example of a closed hyperbolic 4-manifold that admits harmonic spinors. We also explicitly describe the Spinor bundle of a spin hyperbolic 2- or 4-manifold and show how to calculated the subtl…
Paper computes G-index for specific hyperbolic manifolds.
Haken n-manifolds have been defined and studied by B. Foozwell and H. Rubinstein in analogy with the classical Haken manifolds of dimension 3, based upon the the theory of boundary patterns developed by K. Johannson. The Euler characteristic of a Haken manifold is analyzed and shown to be equal to the sum of the Charne…
The Heegaard genus of a 3-manifold, as well as the growth of Heegaard genus in its finite sheeted cover spaces, has extensively been studied in terms of algebraic, geometric and topological properties of the 3-manifold. This note shows that analogous results concerning the trisection genus of a smooth, orientable 4-man…
We extend the methods of Davis-Januszkiewicz-Lafont to provide a new obstruction to smooth Riemannian metric with non-positive sectional curvature. We construct examples of locally CAT(0) 4-manifolds , whose universal covers satisfy isolated flats condition and contain 2-dimensional flats with the property that $\sq…
Quasitoric manifolds, introduced by M. Davis and T. Januskiewicz in 1991, are topological generalizations of smooth complex projective spaces. In 1992, Banchoff and Kühnel constructed a 10-vertex equilibrium triangulations of $\CP^2$. We generalize this construction for quasitoric manifolds and construct some equilibri…
Although Kirby and Siebenmann showed that there are manifolds that do not admit PL structures, the possibility remained that all manifolds could be triangulated. In the late seventies Galewski and Stern and independently Matumoto showed that non-triangulable manifolds exist in all dimensions > 4 if and only if homology…
A closed connected hyperbolic -manifold bounds geometrically if it is isometric to the geodesic boundary of a compact hyperbolic -manifold. A. Reid and D. Long have shown by arithmetic methods the existence of infinitely many manifolds that bound geometrically in every dimension. We construct here infinitely …
A Coxeter group acts properly and cocompactly by isometries on the Davis complex for the group; we call the quotient of the Davis complex under this action the Davis orbicomplex for the group. We prove the set of finite covers of the Davis orbicomplexes for the set of one-ended Coxeter groups is not topologically rigid…
The paper explores conditions for topological rigidity in quotients of the Davis complex.
In this note, we prove the sharp Davies-Gaffney-Grigor'yan lemma for minimal heat kernels on graphs.
The paper explores growth rates and Perron numbers in Coxeter systems with low-dimensional Davis complexes.
We prove a Davies type double integral estimate for the heat kernel under the Ricci flow. As a result, we give an affirmative answer to a question proposed by Chow etc.. Moreover, we apply the Davies type estimate to provide a new proof of the Gaussian upper and lower bounds of which were firs…
We define an operation on homology which we call an -twist annulus modification. We give a new construction of smoothly slice knots and exotically slice knots via -twist annulus modifications. As an application, we present a new example of a smoothly slice knot with non-slice derivatives. Such examples we…
We prove a variant of the Davies-Gaffney-Grigor'yan Lemma for the continuous time heat kernel on graphs. We use it together with the Li-Yau inequality to obtain strong heat kernel estimates for graphs satisfying the exponential curvature dimension inequality.
The Davis-Kahan-Wedin theorem describes how the singular subspaces of a matrix change when subjected to a small perturbation. This classic result is sharp in the worst case scenario. In this paper, we prove a stochastic version of the Davis-Kahan-Wedin theorem when the perturbation is a Gaussian rando…
New proofs for growth series of Coxeter groups using complex structures.
Study complex hyperbolic lattices and their relation to strict hyperbolization.
We discuss whether the strict hyperbolization process of Charney and Davis can be done smoothly.
We prove that strictly hyperbolized smooth cube manifolds admit normal smooth structures.
Study simplicial volume of manifolds from reflection group trick.
It was shown by Jim Davis that a 2-component link with Alexander polynomial one is topologically concordant to the Hopf link. In this paper, we show that there is a 2-component link with Alexander polynomial one that has unknotted components and is not smoothly concordant to the Hopf link, answering a question of Jim D…
We study group actions on manifolds that admit hierarchies, which generalizes the idea of Haken n-manifolds introduced by Foozwell and Rubinstein. We show that these manifolds satisfy the Singer conjecture in dimensions . Our main application is to Coxeter groups whose Davis complexes are manifolds; we show th…
The regular genus of certain 4-manifolds is determined, providing new insights.
We characterize the Murasugi polynomial of an equivariant slice knot by proving a conjecture of J. Davis and S. Naik.
We show that, under weak assumptions, the automorphism group of a cube complex coincides with the automorphism group of Hagen's contact graph . The result holds, in particular, for universal covers of Salvetti complexes, where it provides an analogue of Ivanov's theorem on curve graph…
Associated to any finite flag complex L there is a right-angled Coxeter group W_L and a cubical complex Σ_L on which W_L acts properly and cocompactly. Its two most salient features are that (1) the link of each vertex of Σ_L is L and (2) Σ_L is contractible. It follows that if L is a triangulation of S^{n-1}, then Σ_L…
The complement of an arrangement A of a finite number of affine hyperplanes in complex n-space has the structure of a poset of spaces indexed by the intersection poset, L(A). The space corresponding to G in L(A) is homotopy equivalent to the complement of the hyperplanes in the central arrangement A_G normal to G. This…
Study rigidity of real moment-angle manifolds using cubical geometry.
We show that some embedded standard -spheres in Shimada's exotic -spheres have quotient spaces, s, that are fake real -dimensional projective spaces, i.e., they are homotopy equivalent, but not diffeomorphic to the standard . As observed by F. Wilhelm and th…
We introduce a construction turning some Coxeter and Davis realizations of buildings into systolic complexes. Consequently groups acting geometrically on buildings of triangle types distinct from , , , and various rank types are systolic.
We revisit the problem of maximizing expected logarithmic utility from consumption over an infinite horizon in the Black-Scholes model with proportional transaction costs, as studied in the seminal paper of Davis and Norman [Math. Operation Research, 15, 1990]. Similarly to Kallsen and Muhle-Karbe [Ann. Appl. Probab., …
Let W be a 2-dimensional right-angled Coxeter group. We characterise such W with linear and quadratic divergence, and construct right-angled Coxeter groups with divergence polynomial of arbitrary degree. Our proofs use the structure of walls in the Davis complex.
Let be a Coxeter system with Davis complex . The polyhedral automorphism group of is a locally compact group under the compact-open topology. If is a discrete group (as characterised by Haglund--Paulin), then the set of uniform lattices in is discrete. Whether the converse i…
We characterize groups quasi-isometric to a right-angled Artin group with finite outer automorphism group. In particular all such groups admit a geometric action on a cube complex that has an equivariant "fibering" over the Davis building of .
The paper challenges the validity of cluster validity measures in unsupervised learning.
Classical matrix perturbation results, such as Weyl's theorem for eigenvalues and the Davis-Kahan theorem for eigenvectors, are general purpose. These classical bounds are tight in the worst case, but in many settings sub-optimal in the typical case. In this paper, we present perturbation bounds which consider the natu…
We count orientable small covers over cubes. We also get estimates for , where is the number of orientable small covers and is the number of all small covers over an -cube up to the Davis-Januszkiewicz equivalence.
Study analyzes perturbations in singular subspaces under random noise.
This is an extended version of a talk given at the conference "Algebra and Topology in Interaction" on the occasion of the 70th Anniversary of D.B. Fuchs at UC Davis in September 2009. It is a brief survey of an area originated around 1995 by I. Gelfand and the author.
New hyperbolic manifolds with diverse features created.
In this paper, we obtain Li-Yau type gradient estimates with time dependent parameter for positive solutions of the heat equation that are different with the estimates by Li-Xu \cite{LX} and Qian \cite{Qi}. As an application of the estimate, we also obtained improvements of Davies' Li-Yau type gradient estimate.
Spectral clustering for geometric graphs achieves strong consistency in community recovery.
The present paper provides a multi-period contagion model in the credit risk field. Our model is an extension of Davis and Lo's infectious default model. We consider an economy of n firms which may default directly or may be infected by other defaulting firms (a domino effect being also possible). The spontaneous defau…
This article announces joint work with Frank Connolly and Jim Davis. We generalize our classification of pseudo-free involutions on the n-torus, by studying the action of the associated infinite group with torsion in the universal cover. Included is a non-Riemannian example obtained from the restriction of the action o…
The three operator splitting scheme was recently proposed by [Davis and Yin, 2015] as a method to optimize composite objective functions with one convex smooth term and two convex (possibly non-smooth) terms for which we have access to their proximity operator. In this short note we provide an alternative proof for the…
We consider a cocompact discrete reflection group of a CAT(0) space . Then becomes a Coxeter group. In this paper, we study an analogy between the Davis-Moussong complex and the CAT(0) space , and show several analogous results about the limit set of a parabolic subgroup of the Coxeter group .
