In this paper we study the cobordism of algebraic knots associated with weighted homogeneous polynomials, and in particular Brieskorn polynomials. Under some assumptions we prove that the associated algebraic knots are cobordant if and only if the Brieskorn polynomials have the same exponents.
Study volume growth in Milnor fibers using real Lagrangians.
In this paper, we study deformations of Brieskorn polynomials of two variables obtained by adding linear terms consisting of the conjugates of complex variables and prove that the deformed polynomial maps have only indefinite fold and cusp singularities in general. We then estimate the number of cusps appearing in such…
In this paper we answer the question posed by M.~Atiyah and give an explicit formula for Floer homology of Brieskorn homology spheres in terms of their branching sets over the 3--sphere. We further show how Floer homology is related to other invariants of knots and 3--manifolds, among which are the --invariant o…
New examples show Sasaki manifolds without extremal metrics.
Using -equivariant symplectic homology, in particular its mean Euler characteristic, of the natural filling of links of Brieskorn-Pham polynomials, we prove the existence of infinitely many inequivalent contact structures on various manifolds, including in dimension 5 the k-fold connected sums of a…
Study finds all Brieskorn spheres with at most two fillable contact structures.
We show that Brieskorn manifolds with their standard contact structures are contact branched coverings of spheres. This covering maps a contact open book decomposition of the Brieskorn manifold onto a Milnor open book of the sphere.
New invariant computed for Brieskorn homology spheres.
Study Brieskorn spheres using Floer homology, generating infinite rank summands in homology cobordism.
The study confirms the non-existence of rational homology ball symplectic fillings for certain Brieskorn spheres.
We classify SL(2;C)-representations of a Brieskorn homology 3-sphere. We show any irreducible representation into SL(2;C) is conjugate to that into either SU(2) or SL(2;R). We also give a construction of SL(2;R)-representations for a Brieskorn homology 3-sphere from PSL(2;R)-representations of the base orbifold fundame…
We compute the Heegaard-Floer homology for the family Sigma(2,3,6n+1) of Brieskorn spheres using the algorithm by P. Ozsvath and Z. Szabo
We investigate variations of Brieskorn lattices over non-compact parameter spaces, and discuss the corresponding limit objects on the boundary divisor. We study the associated variation of twistors and the corresponding limit mixed twistor structures. We construct a compact classifying space for regular singular Briesk…
Study shows infinitely many metrics with nonnegative sectional or positive Ricci curvature on specific 5D quotients.
We show that standard cyclic actions on Brieskorn homology 3-spheres with non-empty fixed set do not extend smoothly to any contractible smooth 4-manifold it may bound. The quotient of any such extension would be an acyclic -manifold with boundary a related Brieskorn homology sphere. We briefly discuss well known in…
We give an overview on the tt*-geometry defined for isolated hypersurface singularities and tame functions via Brieskorn lattices. We discuss nilpotent orbits in this context, as well as classifying spaces of Brieskorn lattices and (limits of) period maps.
New contact structures found on Brieskorn spheres.
Study on contact type hypersurfaces in 4-space, proving no Brieskorn spheres can embed.
The paper studies symplectic operations on Stein fillings of Brieskorn singularities.
We recognize the Gromoll-Meyer sphere Sigma^7 as the geodesic join of a simple closed geodesic and a minimal subsphere Sigma^5, which can be equivariantly identified with the Brieskorn sphere W^5_3. As applications we in particular determine the full isometry group of Sigma^7, classify all closed subgroups that act fre…
A conjecture due to Gompf asserts that no nontrivial Brieskorn homology sphere admits a pseudoconvex embedding in , with either orientation. A related question asks whether every compact contractible 4-manifold admits the structure of a Stein domain. We verify Gompf's conjecture, with one orientation, fo…
In this paper, we give a parameterization of the SU(2,1) representation space of the Brieskorn homology spheres using the trace coordinates. As applications, we give an example which shows that the orbifold Toledo invariant in \cite{krebs} does not distinguish the connected components of the PU(2,1) representation spac…
We call an integral homology sphere bounds a rational homology ball if it is obstructed from bounding an integral homology ball. After Fintushel and Stern's well-known example , Akbulut and Larson recently provided the first infinite families of Brieskorn spheres non-trivially boundin…
There are known infinite families of Brieskorn homology 3-spheres which can be realized as boundaries of smooth contractible 4-manifolds. In this paper we show that free periodic actions on these Brieskorn spheres do not extend smoothly over a contractible 4-manifold. We give a new infinite family of examples in which …
We prove symplectic hypersurfaces in Weinstein domains and give obstructions for manifold boundaries.
Fintushel and Stern showed that the Brieskorn sphere bounds a rational homology ball, while its non-trivial Rokhlin invariant obstructs it from bounding an integral homology ball. It is known that their argument can be modified to show that the figure-eight knot is rationally slice, and we use this fact to p…
We develop techniques for computing the integer valued SU(3) Casson invariant. Our method involves resolving the singularities in the flat moduli space using a twisting perturbation and analyzing its effect on the topology of the perturbed flat moduli space. These techniques, together with Bott-Morse theory and the spl…
We encode the variation structure of a quasihomogeneous polynomial with an isolated singularity as introduced by Nemethi in a set of spectral flows of the signature operator on the Milnor bundle by varying global elliptic boundary conditions in a specific way using the quasihomogeneous circle action on the Brieskorn la…
In this survey, we give an overview of Brieskorn manifolds and varieties, and their role in contact topology. We discuss open books, fillings and invariants such as contact and symplectic homology. We also present some new results involving exotic contact structures, invariants and orderability. The main tool for the r…
We study tt*-geometry on the classifying space for regular singular TERP-structures, e.g., Fourier-Laplace transformations of Brieskorn lattices of isolated hypersurface singularities. We show that (a part of) this classifying space can be canonically equipped with a hermitian structure. We derive an estimate for the h…
The paper proves new applications of knot invariants and smooth group actions on 3-spheres.
Cylindrical contact homology is a comparatively simple incarnation of symplectic field theory whose existence and invariance under suitable hypotheses was recently established by Hutchings and Nelson. We study this invariant for a general Brieskorn 3-manifold , and give a complete description of the…
We calculate the eta-invariant for the odd signature operator relative to a specific submersion metric on the Milnor fibration of a quasihomogeneous hypersurface singularity using certain global boundary conditions in terms of the data of its fibre intersection form, monodromy and variation mapping resp. the monomial d…
Study obstructs symplectic structures on Mazur manifolds.
We discuss the complex geometry of two complex five-dimensional Kähler manifolds which are homogeneous under the exceptional Lie group . For one of these manifolds rigidity of the complex structure among all Kählerian complex structures was proved by Brieskorn, for the other one we prove it here. We relate the Käh…
It is known by the author that there exist 20 families of Dehn surgeries in the Poincaré homology sphere yielding lens spaces. In this paper, we give the concrete knot diagrams of the families and extend them to families of lens space surgeries in Brieskorn homology spheres. We illustrate families of lens space surgeri…
Ozsváth and Szabó gave a combinatorial description for the Heegaard Floer homology of boundaries of certain negative-definite plumbings. Némethi constructed a remarkable algorithm for executing these computations for almost-rational plumbings, and his work gives a formula computing the invariants for the Brieskorn homo…
We present techniques, inspired by monodromy considerations, for constructing compact monotone Lagrangians in certain affine hypersurfaces, chiefly of Brieskorn-Pham type. We focus on dimensions 2 and 3, though the constructions generalise to higher ones. The techniques give significant latitude in controlling the homo…
We construct a new class of maximal acyclic matchings on the Salvetti complex of a locally finite hyperplane arrangement. Using discrete Morse theory, we then obtain an explicit proof of the minimality of the complement. Our construction provides interesting insights also in the well-studied case of finite arrangements…
We consider spaces of plane curves in the setting of algebraic geometry and of singularity theory. On one hand there are the complete linear systems, on the other we consider unfolding spaces of bivariate polynomials of Brieskorn-Pham type. For suitable open subspaces we can define the bifurcation braid monodromy takin…
Study compares two methods to extend invariants, finding incompatibility for Brieskorn spheres.
We describe an effective method for simultaneously computing of -invariants of infinite families of Brieskorn spheres with .
We compute the Ozsváth--Szabó contact invariants for all tight contact structures on the manifolds -Σ(2,3,6n-1).
In this work, we study a family of Cremona transformations of weighted projective planes which generalize the standard Cremona transformation of the projective plane. Starting from special plane projective curves we construct families of curves in weighted projective planes with special properties. We explain how to co…
A simple characterization is given of open subsets of a complex surface that smoothly perturb to Stein open subsets. As applications, complex 2-space C^2 contains domains of holomorphy (Stein open subsets) that are exotic R^4's, and others homotopy equivalent to the 2-sphere but cut out by smooth, compact 3-manifolds. …
We corrected a few errors in the previous submission. These do not affect any of the topological conclusions of the earlier version. We have also included a few observations about the Casson invariant of the Brieskorn homology spheres.
