We give some remarks on two closely related issues as stated in the title. In particular we show that a Montesinos knot is SU(2)-simple if and only if it is a 2-bridge knot, extending a result of Zentner for 3-tangle summand pretzel knots. We conjecture with some evidence that an SU(2)-cyclic rational homology 3-sphere…
Using the Hatcher-Oertel algorithm for finding boundary slopes of Montesinos knots, we prove the Slope Conjecture and the Strong Slope Conjecture for a family of 3-tangle pretzel knots. More precisely, we prove that the maximal degrees of the colored Jones polynomial of such knots determine a boundary slope as predicte…
New formula recovers degree of colored Jones polynomials for pretzel knots.
We construct an infinite family of quasi-alternating links from a given quasi-alternating link by replacing a crossing by a product of rational tangles each of which extends that crossing. Consequently, we determine an infinite family of quasi-alternating Montesinos links. This family contains all the classes of quasi-…
We classify the Montesinos links up to mutation and 5-move equivalence, and obtain from this a Jones and Kauffman polynomial test for a Montesinos link.
Paper finds linking numbers for Montesinos links using a simple algorithm.
In this note, we complete the classification of quasi-alternating Montesinos links. We show that the quasi-alternating Montesinos links are precisely those identified independently by Qazaqzeh-Chbili-Qublan and Champanerkar-Ording. A consequence of our proof is that a Montesinos link is quasi-alternating if and onl…
In this paper we show that Montesinos links of the form L(1/2, 1/2, p/q;e), which we call (2,2,r)-Montesinos links, have finite involutory quandles. This generalizes an observation of Winker regarding the (2, 2, q)-pretzel links. We also describe some properties of these quandles.
We show that the volume of any Montesinos link can be bounded above and below in terms of the combinatorics of its diagram. This was known for Montesinos links with at most two tangles, and those with at least five tangles. We complete the result for the remaining cases.
Quasi-alternating links are a generalization of alternating links. They are homologically thin for both Khovanov homology and knot Floer homology. Recent work of Greene and joint work of the first author with Kofman resulted in the classification of quasi-alternating pretzel links in terms of their integer tassel param…
We find two new classes of virtually fibered classic Montesinos links of type .
The paper shows some Montesinos links can't be doubly sliced strongly.
Proves Montesinos-Nakanishi 3-move conjecture for links up to 20 crossings.
We note that a rational -tangle diagram is obtained from a combination of four generators. There is an algorithm to distinguish two rational -tangle diagrams up to isotopy. However, there is no perfect classification about rational -tangle diagrams such as the classification of rational -tangle diagrams cor…
The paper defines normal forms for rational 3-tangles and shows a sequence of moves to transform one form to another.
We find a larger class of virtually fibred classic Montesinos links of type , extending a result of Agol, Boyer and Zhang.
Paper classifies rational 3-tangles using normal forms and minimal coordinates.
Simpler method detects trivial rational 3-tangle.
Given a link , a representation is {\it tracefree} if the image of each meridian has trace zero. We determine the conjugacy classes of tracefree representations when is a Montesinos link.
In recent years, twisted Alexander polynomial has been playing an important role in low-dimensional topology. For Montesinos links, we develop an efficient method to compute the twisted Alexander polynomial associated to any linear representation. In particular, formulas for multi-variable Alexander polynomials of thes…
The aim of this article is to give a characterization of strongly quasipositive quasi-alternating links and detect new classes of strongly quasipositive Montesinos links and non-strongly quasipositive Montesinos links. In this direction, we show that, if is an oriented quasi-alternating link with a quasi-alternatin…
In this paper, We introduce an invariant of rational n-tangles which is obtained from the Kauffman bracket. It forms a vector with Laurent polynomial entries. We prove that the invariant classifies the rational 2-tangles and the reduced alternating rational 3-tangles. We conjecture that it classifies the rational 3-tan…
Paper computes Alexander polynomials for arborescent links.
The aim of this article is to detect new classes of quasi-alternating links. Quasi-alternating links are a natural generalization of alternating links. Their knot Floer and Khovanov homology are particularly easy to compute. Since knot Floer homology detects the genus of a knot as well as whether a knot is fibered, as …
Yasutaka Nakanishi asked in 1981 whether a 3-move is an unknotting operation. In Kirby's problem list, this question is called `The Montesinos-Nakanishi 3-move conjecture'. We define the n-th Burnside group of a link and use the 3rd Burnside group to answer Nakanishi's question; ie, we show that some links cannot be re…
A - is the disjoint union of properly embedded arcs in the unit 3-ball; it is called rational if there is a homeomorphism of pairs from to . Two rational 3-tangles and are isotopic if there is an orientation-preserving self-homeomorphism $h: (…
We study the concept of the fourth skein module of 3-manifolds, that is a skein module based on the skein relation b_0L_0 + b_1L_1 + b_2L_2 + b_3L_3 = 0 and a framing relation L^{(1)} = aL, where a, b_0, b_3 are invertible. We introdule the concept of n-algebraic tangles (and links) and analyze the skein module for 3-a…
The paper defines a preorder on links and explores its implications for symmetric unions.
A ravel is a spatial graph which is non-planar but contains no non-trivial knots or links. We characterize when a Montesinos tangle can become a ravel as the result of vertex closure with and without replacing some number of crossings by vertices.
For the alternating knots or links, mutations do not change the arc index. In the case of nonalternating knots, some semi-alternating knots or links have this property. We mainly focus on the problem of mutation invariance of the arc index for nonalternating knots which are not semi-alternating. In this paper, we found…
In this paper, we show that a link which has a positive and almost alternating diagram is alternating, besides that a positive and non-alternating Montesinos link has an almost positive-alternating diagram.
We prove that the degree of the Brandt-Lickorish-Millet polynomial of any quasi-alternating link is less than its determinant. Therefore, we obtain a new and a simple obstruction criterion for quasi-alternateness. As an application, we identify some knots of 12 crossings or less and some links of 9 crossings or less th…
We show that all two-bridge knot and link complements are virtually fibered. We also show that spherical Montesinos knot and link complements are virtually fibered. This is accomplished by showing that such knot complements are finitely covered by great circle link complements.
The Kauffman-Harary conjecture states that for any reduced alternating diagram K of a knot with a prime determinant p, every non-trivial Fox p-coloring of K assigns different colors to its arcs. We generalize the conjecture by stating it in terms of homology of the double cover of S^3 branched along a link. In this way…
Constructs links that are both quasi-alternating and almost alternating.
A new method calculates HOMFLY-PT polynomials for bipartite links.
Method determines SL(2,C) character variety for Montesinos knots.
In this paper, we characterize all links in the 3-sphere with bridge number at least three that have a bridge sphere of distance two. We show that a link L has a bridge sphere of distance at most two then it falls into at least one of three categories: (1) The exterior of L contains an essential meridional sphere. (2) …
New quasi-alternating links created from existing ones.
We compute the Kauffman bracket polynomial of the three-lead Turk's head, the chain sinnet and the figure-eight chain shadow diagrams. Each of these knots can in fact be constructed by repeatedly concatenating the same 3-tangle, respectively, then taking the closure. The bracket is then evaluated by expressing the stat…
Using the Heegaard Floer homology of Ozsvath and Szabo we investigate obstructions to definite intersection pairings bounded by rational homology spheres. As an application we obtain new lower bounds for the four-ball genus of Montesinos links.
In this paper, we give an isotopy classification of 3-bridge spheres of 3-bridge arborescent links, which are not Montesinos links. To this end, we prove a certain refinement of a theorem of J.S. Birman and H.M. Hilden on the relation between bridge presentations of links and Heegaard splittings of 3-manifolds. In the …
We prove that twisting any quasi-alternating link with no gaps in its Jones polynomial at the crossing where it is quasi-alternating produces a link with no gaps in its Jones polynomial . This leads us to conjecture that the Jones polynomial of any prime quasi-alternating link, other th…
We show that quasi-alternating links arise naturally when considering surgery on a strongly invertible L-space knot (that is, a knot that yields an L-space for some Dehn surgery). In particular, we show that for many known classes of L-space knots, every sufficiently large surgery may be realized as the two-fold branch…
Decomposing knots and links into tangles is a useful technique for understanding their properties. The notion of prime tangles was introduced by Kirby and Lickorish in [3]; Lickorish proved [5] that by summing prime tangles one obtains a prime link. In a similar spirit, summing two prime alternating tangles will produc…
Using an involved study of the Jones polynomial, we determine, as our main result, the crossing numbers of (prime) amphicheiral knots. As further applications, we show that several classes of links, including semiadequate links and Whitehead doubles of semiadequate knots, have non-trivial Jones polynomial. We also prov…
This paper determines the braid indices for non-alternating pretzel links.
