48 results for 3-handle attachments

We give new rational blowdown constructions of exotic CP^2#n(-CP^2) (5\leq n\leq 9) without using elliptic fibrations. We also show that our 4-manifolds admit handle decompositions without 1- and 3-handles, for 7\leq n\leq 9. A strategy for rational blowdown constructions of exotic CP^2#n(-CP^2) (1\leq n\leq 4) is also…

Study shows knots surgered elliptic surfaces admit handle decompositions without 1- and 3-handles.

problem Understanding handle decompositions of knots surgered elliptic surfaces.
method Using Kirby diagrams derived from Lefschetz fibrations.
result Knot surgered elliptic surfaces admit handle decompositions without 1- and 3-handles.

Harer, Kas and Kirby have conjectured that every handle decomposition of the elliptic surface E(1)2,3E(1)_{2,3} requires both 1- and 3-handles. In this article, we construct a smooth 4-manifold which has the same Seiberg-Witten invariant as E(1)2,3E(1)_{2,3} and admits neither 1- nor 3-handles, by using rational blow-downs and K…

We prove that the Dolgachev surface E(1)_{2,3} admits a handlebody decomposition without 1- and 3- handles, and we draw the explicit picture of this handlebody. We also locate a "cork" inside of E(1)_{2,3}, so that E(1)_{2,3} is obtained from E(1) by twisting along this cork.

Harer-Kas-Kirby conjectured that every handle decomposition of the elliptic surface E(1)_{2,3} requires both 1- and 3-handles. We prove that the elliptic surface E(n)_{p,q} has a handle decomposition without 1-handles for n1n\geq 1 and (p,q)=(2,3),(2,5),(3,4),(4,5).

D.Nash defined a family of homotopy 4-spheres in [11]. Proving that his manifolds Sm,n,m,n{\mathcal S}_{m,n,m',n'} are all real S4S^4, we find that they have handle decomposition with no 1-handles, two 2-handles and two 3-handles. The handle structures give new potential counterexamples of Property 2R conjecture.

We study 4-dimensional homology cobordisms without 3-handles, showing that they interact nicely with Thurston geometries, character varieties, and instanton and Heegaard Floer homologies. Using these, we derive obstructions to such cobordisms. As one example of these obstructions, we generalize other recent results on …

Study attached submanifolds in solvmanifolds, generalizing symmetric space results.

problem Exploring submanifolds in non-symmetric spaces with unusual curvature properties.
method Generalizing Tamaru's construction to pseudo-Riemannian scalar products and root spaces.
result Ricci curvature restriction holds for attached submanifolds under specific algebraic conditions.

The main theorem of this paper generalizes recent results in Dehn surgery to the case of handlebody attachment. We consider attaching handlebodies and solid tori to the boundary of an irreducible, boundary-irreducible, atoroidal and acylindrical 3-manifold. We show that for a large class of homeomorphisms attaching the…

We show the homotopy spheres Σn=WfnWΣ_{n} = -W\smile_{f^{n}}W, formed by doubling the infinite order loose-cork (W,f)(W,f) by iterates of the cork diffeomorphism f:WWf: \partial W \to \partial W is S4S^4. To do this we first show that ΣnΣ_{n} are obtained by Gluck twistings of S4S^4; then from this we show how to cancel 33-han…

J. Boyle classified 1-handles attached to surface-knots, that are closed and connected surfaces embedded in the Euclidean 4-space, in the case that the surfaces are oriented and 1-handles are orientable with respect to the orientations of the surfaces. In that case, the equivalence classes of 1-handles correspond to th…

In this paper we define a new cohomology of a smooth manifold called Lichnerowicz type cohomology attached to a function. Firstly, we study some basic properties of this cohomology as: a de Rham type isomorphism, dependence on the function, singular forms, relative cohomology, Mayer-Vietoris sequence, homotopy invarian…

The Lefschetz hyperplane section theorem asserts that an affine variety is homotopy equivalent to a space obtained from its generic hyperplane section by attaching some cells. The purpose of this paper is to describe attaching maps of these cells for the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement defined over real …

Determines conditions for ribbon cobordisms between lens spaces.

problem Conditions for ribbon rational homology cobordisms between lens spaces.
method Analyzes ribbon cobordisms and uses properties of lens spaces and linear lattices.
result If a lens space admits a ribbon rational homology cobordism to a different lens space, it must be homeomorphic to L(n,1)L(n,1), up to orientation-reversal.

A standard convexity condition on the boundary of a symplectic manifold involves an induced positive contact form (and contact structure) on the boundary; the corresponding concavity condition involves an induced negative contact form. We present two methods of symplectically attaching 2-handles to convex boundaries of…

The main theorem of this paper is a generalisation of well known results about Dehn surgery to the case of attaching handlebodies to a simple 3-manifold. The existence of a finite set of `exceptional' curves on the boundary of the 3-manifold is established. Provided none of these curves is attached to the boundary of a…

A variation of the preferential attachment random graph model of Barabási and Albert is defined that incorporates planted communities. We introduce the concept of Hypoelliptic Diffusion Maps (HDM), a framework generalizing Diffusion Maps in the context of manifold learning and dimensionality reduction. Standard non-linear dimensionality reduction methods (e.g., LLE, ISOMAP, Laplacian Eigenmaps, Diffusion Maps) focus on mining massive data sets using w…

Sparse deep neural networks, which learn an economical representation from the data, resemble biological neural networks in many ways. Heegaard diagrams for 5-manifolds help in understanding their structure.

method Introducing a version of Heegaard diagrams for 5-dimensional cobordisms and manifolds, showing diffeomorphisms through specific moves.

The question is: What does happen to the real-world networks which cause them not to grow permanently? The idea here is that real-world networks have to pay the cost of growth. We investigate the growth and trade-off between value and cost in the networks with cost and preferential attachment together. Since the prefer…
