In this paper, the singular-value decomposition theory of complex matrices is explored to study constantly curved 2-spheres minimal in both and the hyperquadric of . The moduli space of all those noncongruent ones is introduced, which can be described by certain complex symmetric matrices…

We show that open 3-manifolds that have a locally finite decomposition along 2-spheres are characterized by the existence of a Riemannian metric with respect to which the second homotopy group of the manifold is generated by small elements.
We study canonical decompositions of postcritically finite branched coverings of the 2-sphere, as defined by K. Pilgrim. We show that every hyperbolic cycle in the decomposition does not have a Thurston obstruction. It is thus Thurston equivalent to a rational map.
Characterizes a specific type of convex curves on a 3-sphere.
The paper proves unique factorization of knotted handlebodies and examines handlebody-knot symmetry.
Motivated by strong desire to understand the natural geometry of moduli spaces of hyperbolic monopoles, we introduce and study a new type of geometry: pluricomplex geometry. It is a generalisation of hypercomplex geometry: we still have a 2-sphere of complex structures, but they no longer behave like unit imaginary qua…
Flattenings of knotted surfaces help define new invariants.
Let be a symplectic rational 4 manifold. We study the space of tamed almost complex structures using a fine decomposition via smooth rational curves and a relative version of the infinite-dimensional Alexander duality. This decomposition provides new understandings of both the variation and stab…
Let G be a graph in a 3-manifold M. We compress the pair (M,G) along admissible 2-spheres as long as possible. What we get is a root of (M,G). Our main result is that for any pair (M,G) the root exists and is unique. As a corollary we get an easy proof of Petronio's theorem on prime decompositions of 3-orbifolds.
New geometric quantisation scheme for hyper-Kähler manifolds.
Study BF invariants using simple type concepts.
The aim of this paper (inspired from a problem of Habegger) is to describe the set of cubical decompositions of compact manifolds mod out by a set of combinatorial moves analogous to the bistellar moves considered by Pachner, which we call bubble moves. One constructs a surjection from this set onto the the bordism gro…
Constructs a simplicial cell decomposition of complex projective space for n ≥ 2.
In this article, relations between the root space decomposition of a Riemannian symmetric space of compact type and the root space decompositions of its totally geodesic submanifolds (symmetric subspaces) are described. These relations provide an approach to the classification of totally geodesic submanifolds in Rieman…
New analysis of crushing surfaces of positive genus impacts triangulation complexity.
We use filtrations of the Grassmannian model to produce explicit algebraic formulae for all harmonic maps of finite uniton number from a Riemann surface, and so all harmonic maps from the 2-sphere, to the unitary group for a general class of factorizations by unitons. We show how these specialize to give explicit formu…
Unique simple spines of homotopy 2-spheres are shown to be ambiently isotopic.
Cannon, Floyd, and Parry have studied subdivisions of the 2-sphere extensively, especially those corresponding to 3-manifolds, in an attempt to prove Cannon's conjecture. There has been a recent interest in generalizing some of their tools, such as extremal length, to higher dimensions. We define finite subdivision rul…
Concrete example of 2-sphere with constant curvature 1 and closed geodesics.
The 3-sphere has either 2 minimal 2-spheres or an optimal foliation by 2-spheres.
We study metric spaces homeomorphic to the 2-sphere, and find conditions under which they are quasisymmetrically homeomorphic to the standard 2-sphere. As an application of our main theorem we show that an Ahlfors 2-regular, linearly locally contractible metric 2-sphere is quasisymmetrically homeomorphic to the standar…
Complete obstruction found for 2-spheres in 5-manifolds to be isotopic.
Motivated by the rich theory of harmonic maps from a 2-sphere, we study biharmonic maps from a 2-sphere in this paper. We first derive biharmonic equation for rotationally symmetric maps between rotationally symmetric 2-manifolds. We then apply the equation to obtain a classification of biharmonic maps in a family of r…
The degree of certain holomorphic 2-spheres is bounded.
Nonorientable 4-manifolds can be fibred over 2-disks with nonorientable fibers.
We study metrics on conic 2-spheres when no Einstein metrics exist. In particular, when the curvature of a conic metric is positive, we obtain the best curvature pinching constant. We also show that when this best pinching constant is approached, the conic 2-sphere has an explicit Gromov-Hausdorff limit. This is a gene…
It is well-known that the Pachner graph of -vertex triangulated -spheres is connected, i.e., each pair of -vertex triangulated -spheres can be turned into each other by a sequence of edge flips for each . In this article, we study various induced subgraphs of this graph. In particular, we prove tha…
Taut foliations map leaves to branched 2-sphere covers.
The study proves the existence of geodesics on reversible Finsler spheres.
Complete invariant defined for doodles on a sphere.
We present explicit geometric decompositions of the complement of tiling links, which are alternating links whose projection graphs are uniform tilings of the 2-sphere, the Euclidean plane or the hyperbolic plane. This requires generalizing the angle structures program of Casson and Rivin for triangulations with a mixt…
We study topological properties of the Gromov-Hausdorff metric on the set of isometry classes of nonnegatively curved -spheres.
Proves existence of curves with constant curvature in a sphere.
Study describes bifurcations of gradient flows on 2-sphere with holes.
We extend our previous definition of quasi-local mass to 2-spheres whose Gauss curvature is negative and prove its positivity.
In a previous paper, we showed that any Jacobi field along a harmonic map from the 2-sphere to the complex projective plane is integrable (i.e., is tangent to a smooth variation through harmonic maps). In this paper, in contrast, we show that there are (non-full) harmonic maps from the 2-sphere to the 3-sphere and 4-sp…
The paper classifies Willmore 2-spheres in .
In 1987, Kalai proved that stacked spheres of dimension are characterised by the fact that they attain equality in Barnette's celebrated Lower Bound Theorem. This result does not extend to dimension . In this article, we give a characterisation of stacked -spheres using what we call the {\em separatio…
Let S be a triangulated 2-sphere with fixed triangulation T. We apply the methods of thin position from knot theory to obtain a simple version of the three geodesics theorem for the 2-sphere [5]. In general these three geodesics may be unstable, corresponding, for example, to the three equators of an ellipsoid. Using a…
The paper finds 3-colorings of 2-sphere triangulations.

New Finsler metric on sphere disproves systolic ratio conjecture.
Shortest geodesic on curved spheres is no longer than 3 times the diameter.
Generalized Thurston's characterization for branched coverings of the 2-sphere.
We prove that a riemannian metric on the 2-sphere or the projective plane can be C2-approximated by a smooth metric whose geodesic flow has an elliptic closed geodesic.
We study the space of hyperbolic 2-spheres with cone points of prescribed apex curvatures and some related spaces. For , we get a detailed description of such spaces. The euclidean 2-spheres were considered by W. P. Thurston: for , the corresponding space…
The study finds resonance points in polarised curves with polynomial conserved quantities.
Here we discuss an example of topologically isotopic but smoothly non-isotopic pair of 2-spheres in a simply connected 4-manifold, which become smoothly isotopic after stabilizing by connected summing with S^2 x S^2.
